Synopsis

The revival and spread of Greek and Byzantine writing in the West is a direct result of the work of Aldus Manutius and his close Greek collaborators: Marcus Musurus, Demetrius Ducas, Justin Dekadyos and Ioannis Grigoropoulos. Under the supervision of the scholars in question, Aldus’s publishing house released monumental works, such as the Opera Omnia of Aristotle and the Dialogues of Plato, but also the comedies of Aristophanes and the tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, as well as historical works by Herodotus, Thucydides and Xenophon. The present edition discusses Aldus’s work on Greek typography and addresses the aesthetics of his publications. The book was published in Italian as the catalogue of the exhibition organised in the Marciana National Library.
